Breast Care Imaging Navigator at MetroWest Medical Center Supports Patients During Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October
Oct 16, 2023Breast Care Navigators are the glue that put all the pieces of care together
FRAMINGHAM, Mass. – October 15, 2023 – An abnormal mammogram or a diagnosis of breast cancer can be alarming and overwhelming. Women often have many questions and don't know where to start. At MetroWest Medical Center, patients diagnosed with breast cancer may be guided through the process of their treatment with the help of its Breast Care Imaging Navigator.
MetroWest’s Breast Care Imaging Navigator, Sharon Fitzpatrick RN, BSN, is available to provide one-on-one assistance to women navigating them through the complex map of scheduling so that the next important tests occur timely. Sharon also provides emotional support and calming reassurance at a time when the patient needs it most. She translates medical information and helps patients and their families understand the plan of care and what to expect.
“The importance of providing emotional support to patients and their families cannot be overstated,” says Sharon. “I remain a constant presence and coordinator of the social, emotional, and educational needs of the patient and her family. I also help empower patients to work as a partner with the healthcare team through education on understanding medical procedures and terms.”
Whether you are facing breast cancer or a less serious disease of the breasts, a Breast Care Imaging Navigator is an invaluable resource. There are many benefits for patients to have one at their hospital. A Breast Care Imaging Navigator:
-
Serves as a guide for patients through the continuum of care with breast health issues.
-
Provides pre-op education session(s) for patient and support person(s) along with a "survivor education packet" uniquely designed for each individual’s needs.
-
Assists patients with community resources when needed during treatment and recovery
-
Works closely with a panel of surgeons, radiologists and oncologists who have a specific interest and background in Breast Cancer Management.
“As a clinical navigator for breast health, I deal with the emotional and scientific aspects of breast health care,” says Sharon. “While dealing with a breast disease is never easy, partnering with a Breast Care Imaging Navigator can ease much of a patient’s anxiety.”
MetroWest Medical Center’s Imaging Center is the foundation for breast health services including:
