HealthGrades Ranks MetroWest Medical One of America’s Top 100 Hospitals For Coronary Intervention

Feb 16, 2023

healthgrades-coronary-300x200FRAMINGHAM – MetroWest Medical Center announced on Valentine’s Day it is one of America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Coronary Intervention, according to new research released by Healthgrades, a leading marketplace connecting doctors and patients.

This achievement reflects MetroWest Medical Center’s outstanding clinical outcomes for Coronary Intervention and puts MetroWest Medical Center in the top 5% of hospitals nationwide for Coronary Intervention, said HealthGrades

healthgrades-coronary2-300x200“At MetroWest Medical Center, we are very proud of our organization’s commitment to high-quality specialty care,” said John Whitlock, Interim Chief Executive Officer MetroWest Medical Center. “It’s a special designation to achieve the top 100 coronary intervention award, in addition to our other cardiac, and critical care accolades. We are excited to celebrate our awards on Valentine’s Day, during National Heart Month.” Healthgrades evaluated patient mortality and complication rates for 31 of the most common conditions and procedures at nearly 4,500 hospitals across the country to identify the top-performing hospitals for specialty care.

This year’s analysis revealed significant variation in patient outcomes between America’s 100 Hospitals for Coronary Intervention and hospitals that did not receive this distinction.

For example: From 2019-2021, patients treated at hospitals receiving the America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Coronary Intervention Award have, on average a 47.3% lower risk of dying than if they were treated in hospitals that did not receive the award. * “We commend MetroWest Medical Center for their ongoing commitment to providing high-quality care to patients undergoing Coronary Intervention,” said Brad Bowman, MD, Chief Medical Officer and Head of Data Science at Healthgrades. “Consumers can feel confident that America’s 100 Best Hospitals for Coronary Intervention have demonstrated their ability to deliver consistently exceptional outcomes.”

“In our most recent reports of the Nation Health Grades identified that if all hospitals performed at the five star level like Metro West Medical and St. Vincent’s are in cardiac, over 200,000 lives could have been saved over that 3-year period nearly 160,000 complications could have been prevented,” said Dr. Bowman.

In addition to being Named Among the Top 5% in the Nation for Coronary Intervention Procedures in 2023, MetroWest Medical Center has also been recognized with the following achievements:

  • Five-Star Recipient for Treatment of Sepsis for 11 Years in a Row (2013-2023)
  • Five-Star Recipient for Treatment of Respiratory Failure in 2023
  • “Two distinctions in critical care. I want to highlight first for respiratory failure. 2023, Metro West Medical was identified as a five star for respiratory fail failure. Second area to note treatment of sepsis. Certainly not something you’re going to see on billboards or in the news, but I think that the community in the hospital, it’s maybe the most multidisciplinary diagnosis that a patient can present with. And to have the team come together and for the 11th year in a row achieve a five star designation for your sepsis care is really outstanding. And something to take tremendous pride,” said Dr. Bowman.
  • “These scores, these grades, health grades are testament to everything you’ve been doing and just ask you to keep doing it and come celebrate with us,” said Interim CEO Whitlock.

(Retired MWMC Cardiologist) Dr. Biagio Conte spoke at the event.

“I’m really proud that Framingham is identified as one of the best cardiac coronary. And it makes me feel good because if I had a chest pain, I’d come here comfortably,” said Dr. Conte.” And, I think that we don’t promote that enough. We promote all the nasty things that are happening at the hospital. There should be a newspaper person here.”

“This hospital was a terrific hospital. I used to do more chest surgery than they did at the Mass General,” said Dr. Conte.

“These distinctions are a testament to the hard work and dedication of all of you, our team, and you should all be extremely proud of your accomplishments today,” said Interim CEO Whitlock. “Earning this award is a direct reflection of our long-standing focus on quality outcomes and process improvement.”
