MetroWest Medical Center & Tufts Medicine Collaborate To Encourage Screenings & Preventative Care During Cancer Prevention Month in February

Feb 22, 2023

FRAMINGHAM – During National Cancer Prevention Month, MetroWest Medical Center and Tufts Medicine, collaborators in providing comprehensive cancer care in the region, are reminding the community of the importance of cancer screenings and lifestyle changes to reduce preventable cancer.

According to the National Institutes of Health, nearly 1.9 million people are diagnosed with cancer each year in the United States.

Nearly half of those diagnoses are breast, prostate, lung, pancreas, or colon cancers. More than 40 percent of all cancers and nearly half of all deaths from cancer in the United States can be attributed to personal choices, including smoking, physical inactivity, and excessive exposure to the sun.

For National Cancer Prevention Month in February, the focus is on making healthy decisions to lessen the odds of developing cancer.

Five of the top things that can be done to decrease cancer risk include:

  • Regular exercise
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Eating healthy foods
  • Quitting or never starting smoking
  • Limiting alcohol use

Other actions that help to prevent cancer, or catch it early, include routine checkups and cancer screenings, treating or preventing other health conditions, and knowing personal risk factors. In the unfortunate event that you or a loved one are diagnosed with cancer, comprehensive care is available close to home.

Since mid-January, MetroWest Medical Center and Tufts Medicine have collaborated to provide a full range of cancer screening, diagnostic and treatment care. MetroWest Medical Center offers preventative cancer care and screenings, as well as various surgical and procedural treatments. The Tufts Medicine Cancer Center – Framingham offers medical and radiation oncology and access to highly-advanced treatment modalities, leading cancer research programs and cutting-edge clinical trials for a variety of cancers.
