3D Mammography Program Expands at the MetroWest Wellness Center
Jan 29, 2021
MetroWest Medical Center is excited to announce the expansion of its 3D mammography capability with the addition of a new machine. Utilizing advanced breast tomosynthesis technology, these exams are clinically proven to significantly increase the detection of breast cancers, and also decrease the number of women asked to return for additional testing.
“By offering this new technology, we are investing in our community,” says Ava Collins, CEO of MetroWest Medical Center. “Making these mammograms available at the MetroWest Wellness Center will allow our patients to conveniently receive high quality diagnostic imaging right in their own neighborhood”.
In conventional 2D Mammography, overlapping tissue is a leading reason why small breast cancers may be missed and normal tissue may appear abnormal, leading to unnecessary callbacks. A 3D exam includes a three-dimensional method of imaging that can greatly reduce the tissue overlap effect.
Many women with breast cancer show no symptoms, making screening even more important. The American Cancer Society recommends annual mammograms for women aged 45-55; and once every one or two years for ages 55+.
